xx It's NEW to YOU and US too!
June 27, 2008, 11:44:18 AM by Drix
Howdy forum readers.  Welcome to the 21st Century's ONLINE - ONBOARD CREW INTERPHONE.
Just like the 20th Century B-17’s onboard radio device (interphone), we can all communicate around the plane (world) here in this new Forum.
Unlike the 20th Century device, however, it's a bit more complicated than to press and hold the button on the mike, talk a bit, end your message by saying "OVER," release the button and then listen for the answer.  More clicking required here, but it's not complicated to use, just new. We hope to keep it simple and add more fun stuff as we fly along in our connected Formation of minds and hearts.

So, be patient and excited with us.  We're learning how to fly this thing as you're learning how to use it.  We're open for suggestions from users, and folks that have also used these programs.

Like the B-17, we know this machine will take us HIGH and HEAVY and is bristling with features.
But not all at once as we plan to add them as we learn them. This gets complex very fast.
But as you read this - look out your window (monitor) and notice - we're already airborne and on the Internet.  So the hardest part is behind us.

So buckle your seatbelt and start flying by sharing what you know and asking for what you don't.

Thanx,
DRiX - a 95th BG Data Squadie

exclamation FORUM RULES - FLY STRAIGHT and AVOID the FLAK
June 21, 2008, 06:22:10 PM by Drix
This is obvious, but is not official till you say it here.

THIS IS A FRIENDLY FORUM. PLEASE HELP US KEEP IT THAT WAY.  It's an odd thing with TYPING COMMUNICATION into FORUMS, but sometimes things seem MEAN and ANGRY when you are just trying to make a point.  It's the MEDIA that changes the MESSAGE.  Knowing this is important.  So, please help us keep your FORUM FRIENDLY.

We are more than just a data exchange, we are an ONLINE COMMUNITY and we will communicate with INTEGRITY, HONOR and KINDNESS. We do this because it works best and because we want to maximize our moments here with the 95th Heavy Bomb Group: Vets, Members, Family, Friends, Fans and those who do Research. HUMOR is appreciated, and WIT will be copied and often quoted! <grin>

PLEASE - NO: spitting, flaming, challenging, or mean spirited talk.  Please don't post anything that is UNKIND.  The FORUM FOLX work hard to build and keep this forum aloft and flying smoothly.  If necessary, they will remove any posts that are not appropriate, or move posts that get off topic.  If it happens repeatedly, they can ban you from the group and erase your posts.    Angry talk on a forum is not new, and is called "flaming."  So, post a lot, enjoy the forum all you can, and please don't get shot down in flames... <g>
(note those little EMOTICONS are used to help express emotions and are EASY to TYPE. i.e., <g> means <grin> and is a happy thing.

There's a lot more and you can learn and use them here too.  Here's a link to a site that will explain more. http://www.portnet.k12.ny.us/port2000/acronyms.htm

Thanx and WELCOME ABOARD. Enjoy your flying here.

thumbup Can I "START" a TOPIC and what does REPLY mean?
June 11, 2008, 11:24:47 PM by DrNine
If you see this now, then YES is the answer.
GUESTS have access to read just about everything, but can't post anything.

ONLY if you are a REGISTERED FORUM user can you CREATE a topic you want to share and discuss.
I CREATED this POST as simply a REGISTERE'D USER - not an Administrator.
(After saying this, there are some topics that are different.  Some are read only (info) and some are Sticky (stay at the top) but this is an OPEN FORUM for DISCUSSION - and the REGISTRATION is FREE and it's purpose is to keep this forum clean and useful and roBOT and SPAM free.  (Spammers will be removed.)

PLEASE USE YOUR POWERS CAREFULLY - YOUR TOPIC may already be here.

Here's the basic setup.  Yes, it is confusing... at first.
FORUM - this whole DISCUSSON AREA (most of the disussions are about the 95th Bomb Group (H)
CATEGORIES - MAJOR GROUPS of discussion
TOPICS or SUBJECTS - Areas of discussion that go with the CATEGORY.
(CHILD BOARDS) Like TOPICS but offer a more controlled grouping.
For example, under the "CREW POSITIONS" BOARD are CHILD BOARDS of: PILOT, CO-PILOT, ETC.  THis way they stay grouped.  We use these sparingly.

POSTS - are YOUR replies to SUBJECTS.  This is what makes it a discussion.

When they line up behind a topic which we call this a "thread."  i.e. under PILOT somebody posts - I was a pilot and I flew 35 missions.  Somebody can reply to that and say, "I flew 25 missions." Somebody else can reply to the first post and say, "I flew 12 misssions."  SO all of these replies are about the same topic of PILOT.  SO they are the same "thread."

It is important to keep like things together so they can be read and researched and can be found by search engines.

So BEFORE you post your TOPIC, do a SEARCH (search box for the FORUM is up top there) and see if it's already there.  If it's not, then you can start one, and put it in the area it goes.

Don't worry about making a mistake, The 95thBG.org FORUM TEAM will sometimes move and change things a bit to make the FORUM easier to understand and use.
Thanx and welcome aboard.

Also, notice there is a growing LINE of WORDS near the top of the page telling you where you are.  They are clickable so you can use them to go back a step or more too.

CONFUSED?  (I am <grin>) We've made a TEST POST area where you can POST, REPLY, and just play with it to see how it works.  We'll clean it out every now and then, so post there and when you think you got it, go post for real.

Like a B-17 over the channel, we'll keep adjusting things all the time.  HEy, we are learning to fly this right with you.
Together - we're the 95th BG Formation.

Enjoy your flight....

xx New User Registration Process
June 10, 2008, 11:13:02 PM by Drix
New User Registration Process - This will get you started.  Once you get it, you'll "get it."

Welcome to the 95thBG.org FORUM (clever name, eh?)

Why register?  Answer - to maintain control.  Without a door and key, this board will be so full of ads and hacks that nobody can enjoy it, and the fun and utility stops.  The registration process is an easy process much like other systems you register to use.

BASICALLY: You create an ONLINE NAME (make if fun) and you give your EMAIL ADDRESS (a real one) and that's it.
It's that simple - or should be.  Things do happen.

When you register as a user on this message board system, you will receive an email message from the message board mail server. The email message will be sent to the address you submitted during the registration process.

There are two reasons why we send out these confirmation email messages:
-- To authenticate your email address and not a roBOT registering as you.
-- To confirm your desire to register, and it's not somebody that's not you.

The instructions on the email message you receive will activate your account.  Write down your password, even though you have it memorized on your computer.

You may not see or get this email back from our forum site because your email system may think it's Spam.   control software features are designed to block 'junk' email or email from unknown or unwanted senders. However, these blocking techniques may cause the unintended consequence of blocking messages that you really want to receive.

This email may simply go to your JUNK or SPAM folder in your email program.  The only way it won't is because you have more spam filters you may not know you have.  e.g., your Internet service provider offers a Spam blocking feature that requires the sender to first respond to a return email in order to be added to a 'white list' or approved sender list, or you have software that requires the FORUM to respond to a return email in order to be added to an approved sender list, which this Forum cant' do, or you have to add our domain (95thbg.org) to your WHITE LIST of approved senders.  So, if it don't work right away, try these steps.  Still confused, get a kid from your neighborhood to help you figure it out. Of course, call one of us and we'll help you too. If all else fails, just call one of the Data Squaddies and we'll talk to you on the phone and throw what switches we can here to shortcut the process. <g>
Thanx,
Drix - forum f(l)ounder. <g>

As they say in the 100th BG - "Have you thanked a veteran today?"

Some notes on usage

All the functions have an output method parameter. This can either be "echo" (the default) or "array".
If it is "echo", the function will act normally - otherwise, it will return an array containing information about the requested task.
For example, it might return a list of topics for ssi_recentTopics.

This functionality can be used to allow you to present the information in any way you wish.
